INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT DR. HEYAMOTO

Dr. Heyamoto has lectured for the Washington State Dental Association, Oregon State Dental Association, Idaho Academy of General Dentistry, Washington AGD, Seattle-King County Dental Association, Snohomish County Dental Association and numerous study clubs around the state. He has served as President of WA AGD, Secretary of SKCDS, been a WA AGD Alternate/Delegate, an Alternate Delegate for WSDA at ADA Annual Meetings and is currently the Continuing Dental Education Chair for WA AGD. He also served as the Trustee for AGD's Region 11 from 2007 to 2014. After serving as the chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee for the Washington State Dental Association in 2009-10, he ran for a seat on the Board of Directors to WSDA (2010-13). In 2013, he ran successfully for a second term on the Board and served until 2016.
In 2011, Dr. Heyamoto was asked to write a chapter for a textbook regarding the phenomena of "Dentin Regeneration" by Dr. M. Somerman, then the Dean of the University of Washington School of Dentistry. The book was printed in 2012 making Dr. Gary a published author, something unusual for a non-academia full time practicing dentist.

Pursuant to his perfectionist nature, Dr. Heyamoto has demonstrated his need to be accurate by working, since 1983, as a team statistician for the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Huskies. He tallies all the defensive statistics for the UW football team and tracked assists, turnovers, steals and blocked shots for the UW Men's basketball squad for over a decade. He also runs the 30 second shot clock for the UW Women's Basketball home games.

Being judged one of the best at what they do, the Husky Football Stat Crew worked their 11th straight Rose Bowl Game on January 1, 2019. If that wasn't enough, Dr. Heyamoto was fortunate to call the defensive statistics for the January 7th, 2019 NCAA CFP National Championship Game in Santa Clara.
On January 8, 2018 and on January 9, 2017, he called all the defensive tackles, sacks, fumbles and interceptions for the National Championship Game in Tampa when Clemson defeated Alabama.
The UW Stat Crew worked the first ever college playoff game at the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2015 and two weeks later, the crew worked the first ever National Championship Bowl Game in Dallas on Monday January 12, 2015.
On January 6, 2014 he called the defensive stats for the NCAA BCS National Championship Game between Auburn and Florida State.
In 2013, Dr. Heyamoto kept the shot-clock for the Pac-12 Women's Tournament in Seattle. The University of Washington crew enjoyed 11 games in 4 days. Stanford was crowned Pac-12 champions for the 2012-13 season.
In 2015, he again kept the shot-clock for the entire four day tournament, watching USC defeat Oregon State 71-62 to win the PAC-12 Chanpionship for the 2013-14 season.
2016 found the UW Stat crew at Key Arena working the PAC-12 Tournament for the 2014-15 season.
In addition, Dr. G worked the Men's NCAA second and third rounds held at Key Arena during "March Madness" for the 2014-15 season.
2017 had Dr. Gary keeping the shot clock for all 11 games for the PAC-12 tournament as he will again for the 2018 PAC-12 Tournament.
The 2015-16 season's PAC 12 Women's Tournament at Key Arena was won by Oregon State University. Dr. Gary worked the shot clock for all eleven games. He again, for the fifth consecutive year, ran the shot clock for the 2016-17 season's PAC 12 Women's Tournament at Key Arena (won by Stanford).
In 2017, Dr. Heyamoto was part of the NCAA's Women's First and Second Round "March Madness" by serving as the shot clock operator when the University of Washington hosted the three day event.

As a hobby, Dr. Heyamoto creates Ukrainian Eggs using chicken eggs, Batik dyes and dental wax. Starting with a white egg, Dr. H carefully adds wax over what he wants white, then dyes the egg yellow. He repeats the process by adding wax over what he wants yellow, then dyes the egg orange. This is repeated until the last dye used is black. Accuracy and intricacy, as well as patience and a steady hand, yield works of art that he donates to charity auctions.

Dr. Heyamoto has drawn cartoons for the Seattle-King County Dental Society's news journal. He has also illustrated for the Washington State Dental Association publication on an "as needed" basis.

Since 1983 he has drawn and distributed a free calendar for his patients .... dental themed, of course. Initially Dr. Gary hid the name of his wife Cynthia in each drawing. He added his children, Tyler and Taryn when they were born, then added his son in-law and daughter in-law's names when they married. Finally, in the last edition in 2019, he added his grandson's name. Thirty-six calendars! It's been a great ride!

In 1999, Jack Canfield and Mark Hansen published their "Chicken Soup" book on Dentistry. A nationwide search resulted in over 1,200 stories being collected, of which only 64 were chosen. Dr. Heyamoto's story is on page 120!

Dr. Heyamoto was honored in 2005 by being chosen for the cover story of "Doctor of Dentistry" Magazine.
The article chronicled his activities within organized dentistry as well as his involvement in community events.
He emphasized the need to be a continuous student, a lifelong learner, which is something he has taken to heart by earning AGD's coveted Fellowship, Mastership and Lifelong Learner Awards.
This honor came after he had just completed serving two years as President of the Washington State Academy of General Dentistry.
